Mahjong Accessories Explained: Mat, Ruler, Dice, Case and Tile Holders

Accessories are small, but they make a noticeable difference to how a game runs.

Mat. A playing mat softens tile clatter and protects the table, and gives tiles a little grip so they do not slide. Most roll up for storage.

Ruler / tile rack. A rack holds your hand upright so tiles are easy to read and nothing topples mid-turn. One per player is ideal.

Dice. Dice decide where to break the wall and who deals. Keep a spare pair, as they are easy to misplace.

Case. A protective case keeps tiles together, prevents scratches and makes the set easy to carry. For travel, a firm case matters most.

Counters. Chips or score sticks keep scoring quick and avoid pen-and-paper interruptions.

For a home game you really need a mat, racks for each player, dice and a way to score. Check whether accessories are included or sold separately, match the mat to your table, and make sure racks suit your tile size. Build up only what your group actually uses.
