How to Set Up a Mahjong Table Correctly
A tidy setup makes a game run smoothly. Here is a simple, repeatable approach.
Space and seating. Use a square table with room for four players and a wall of tiles in front of each seat. Seats link to the Winds — East, South, West, North — which also sets the turn order.
Shuffle. Turn all tiles face down and mix them thoroughly with both hands so the deal is random.
Build the walls. Each player stacks tiles two high into a row, and the four rows form a square. The exact length depends on your set and rules.
Dice and dealing. The dealer rolls to decide where to break the wall, then tiles are dealt around the table until each player has thirteen, with the dealer taking one extra to start.
Accessories. A mat keeps tiles quiet and protects the table. Racks (rulers) hold your hand upright so it is easy to read and nothing topples mid-turn. Keep dice and counters within reach.
Agree the rule set before the first discard, including how bonus tiles are handled. After a few sessions the setup takes a couple of minutes, and a clean table keeps everyone focused on the game.
