How to Choose a Mahjong Set: Size, Material, Finish and Feel
A good set is the one that is easy to read and comfortable to play with. Four things decide that.
Size. Larger tiles are easier to read across the table, which helps mixed groups. Smaller tiles are lighter and more portable. Check the millimetre size, not just photos.
Material. Acrylic crystal tiles are light, hard-wearing and easy to wipe clean, which suits regular play. They hold colour well and resist chips.
Finish. Finish is mostly look and grip. Glitter and solid colours read differently under light, so pick what your group finds easy on the eyes. A glossy face is simple to clean.
Feel. Weight and edges matter more than they seem. Tiles with a solid weight and rounded corners are comfortable through a long session.
Also check the tile count and whether accessories such as a mat or rack are included. For weekly games, prioritise durability and readability; for gifting, finish and presentation carry more weight; for travel, size and a case matter most. If unsure, start with a standard-size acrylic set in a finish you like and add accessories later.
