Chinese, Hong Kong, American and Japanese Mahjong: What Is the Difference?

Mahjong has several regional versions. They share the same tiles but differ in rules and scoring.

Chinese. Often fast and triplet-friendly, with scoring that depends on the regional rule set — and there are many. A common base goal is four sets and a pair.

Hong Kong. One of the most widely played versions, popular for straightforward scoring built around 'faan' points and clear winning conditions. A good default for a new group.

American. Played with a yearly card that lists valid hands, plus Jokers. The card changes annually, so hands are defined differently from most other versions. Social and structured, but the card is essential.

Japanese (Riichi). Known for the 'riichi' declaration, dora bonus tiles and detailed scoring. It rewards careful, defensive play and suits players who enjoy depth.

For a new group, Hong Kong rules are an easy starting point — common, well documented and quick to learn. The tiles and the draw-and-discard loop stay the same across versions, so switching mainly means new scoring. Pick one version per session and stick to it.
